Pirates Discussion: A Question For the Community on a Day Off For the Pirates – Pirates Prospects

2022-07-15 22:46:34 By : Ms. Maggie Lee

Throughout this site’s history, two things have been true of the comment section:

While the comment section doesn’t make up a lot of our readers, it’s always been something we’ve valued due to that last part. We overhauled the commenting system last month, and will be overhauling the daily features that lead to most of the comments.

Starting today, the game discussions will now go under the Daily Pirates Discussion. This will go up each night with P2Daily, the Daily Video Rundown, and the Prospect Watch. The latter will also be seeing a change in publishing time, aimed at giving you a preview each day and a discussion space for the minors.

The Daily Pirates Discussion will also run during off days, giving a place to discuss the MLB team even when there is no game. More importantly, having it run all day will allow for plenty of pre-game discussion throughout the day.

As today is an off-day for the Pirates, I’ll pose a question to the community: What do you want to see more of on Pirates Prospects?

Great site. I like many of the improvements. One major disappointment. It is already June and the Prospect Guide is not out. The advance purchase of guide estimated and end of March release. I think the goal should be to get the guide in print by the start of Spring Training. I would have liked to have it in Bradenton this year. The Player info on the Depth Chart is one of my favorite parts of the site. But I like having the paper guide as a quick reference as I attend a bunch of MILB games across the system.

Another feature that I liked from years ago was individual game reports from the various minor league affiliates. It was much more informative then a box score summary.

Great site with lots of variety from the authors and commenters.

At times I think there is too much tinkering with the commenting system / article schedules etc

However, that tinkering is probably what makes the site as successful as it is

I’d be curious to see an article on the young Pirate pitchers

If you believe this site (below) the Pirates already have 4 young, quality starters including this guy

https://twitter.com/qopbaseball/status/1533820867972542464?s=21&t=aZiuGNF_Bex4t9m9LPN_5w

Not sure of the difficulty but adding a forum may be interesting

Dillon Peters goes on the 15-day IL. That hurts. Banda is only LHer. Could Fletcher get the call? Or Wilson? Or Hembree is door 3, and the likely call-up.

Alldred and vieux also having great years at AAA as LHP

I would guess Fletcher. Has an 0.82 ERA in AAA. What’s wrong with Peters?

Was on the way home tonight and put on Ziese for laughs. Mackey was on and was talking about some potential trades involving Quintana, Vogy, Gamel, and Yoshi. Zeise asked about trading Bednar. Mackey said there will be no Bednar trade any time soon. Ziese could not believe that. Said why as they are several years away still. Mackey said that teams would never offer what the Bucs would want and the Bucs should stick to a huge ask now. Zeise said but he is a luxury. Mackey said “what luxury? He makes like $700000. Do you consider a Chevy Cruze a luxury?” If he was 5 years established the yes he would be a luxury but right now at his cost he is more like a Chevy in cost and far exceeding it. Zeise still has no clue who the Pirates have yet to come from the farm. If the Bucs start this winter doing what I believe they will then they will be adding some modest FA to some 2-3 year contracts who can play to add to the kids coming and I believe they will be very competitive by mid season next year.

Lol i was listening to this and just laughing the whole time

I swear Ziese never listens to what his guests actually. He will still ask the questions that they have already answered during the conversation. He must not have any back up questions prepared or can’t improvise new ones so he asks the questions already answered and the quest basically has to say well I already answered that and here it is again…

Was just scanning box scores and Hunter Greene has faced the minimum through 7. The first batter for the Dbacks, Varsho, had a bunt single but was caught stealing on a strike-’em-out-throw-’em-out DP. Since then it’s been 19 up and 19 down.

That kid is a beast, top 5 starter in a couple of years if healthy.

One thing id like to see is more daily articles. The tuesday articles are fine but having them in bulk and less content through the week doesn’t work for me. I appreciate all your writing talents and have appreciated reading Tims toughts and breakdowns over the years esp when outlining the disparity in baseball that most fans cant relate to. Thank you for you do and for caring about our opinions.

Friendly suggestion: there used to be detailed article on guys when they were first called up to the MLB. Given all the call ups so far this year and the ones upcoming, I think those articles would be fun to bring back if that could be fit in somewhere. No pressure. I’m enjoying the site more now than ever. Keep up the good work.

Not a request for more. You already provide plenty of material. My comment is on presentation: I have been a fairly long-time subscriber (three or four years, I think), but I still have difficulty navigating the site.

The material is categorized in ways I sometimes do not understand. Maybe it is just me.

Anyway, I used to comment more often, but since COVID, I have rarely commented. It isn’t because I am ignoring the articles. I do try to check the site a number of times a week and read when I am here.

I will renew my sub when it comes up again. Good work.

It is hard to keep up with what is already there. Keep giving us more.

I’m not sure what my status is on here (regular or more likely irregular) but I’ve been a member for several years and comment fairly often from my perspective, although not nearly as frequently as some. Sometimes the exchanges are thought provoking and intelligent and sometimes not so much but they’re nearly always interesting.

I enjoy having somewhere to go that doesn’t just give the sales pitches of the sights operated by the team or the ridiculous chatter and name calling found on a lot of those message boards. I’ve found that for the most part people who make comments here are informed and interested in the team but also usually open to different views and considerate rather than obnoxious. That’s pretty rare at least in my limited experience.

I plan to continue to be a member and to comment when or if I have something worth saying (from my own point of view of course) but have no interest in getting likes or moving up in league status because that feels too much like seeking the approval of others and that’s not my reason for being here. I want information and different or sometimes confirming ideas and hope to be around likeminded fans when, not if, the Pirates start showing significant movement in the right direction.

Keep up the good work. I’ll be watching if not commenting, although I’ll most likely be doing some of that as well especially given the seemingly positive direction the team is beginning to take. Of course complaining is always a possibility too.

I have often wished PP had an old fashioned message board where commenters could toss up subjects. It sounds like you’re going towards that w this all-day thread but it’s something to consider. Clearly moderated so we don’t go down the crazy path that killed all the old message boards off.

Too late……Many of us (as I am looking in the mirror) are clearly already down that crazy path……. (suddenly have the old “They’re coming to take me away” song in my head for some reason…..those stinking voices…. 😜 )

Tim, I 100% understand if you and the team don’t want to do this, but would you consider letting us know if you plan on being at certain games? For me it would just be a fun handshake and not to keep you from your work. I’d also encourage other subscribers if you choose to let people know. Adding the personal touch to this community. I don’t get too many games but have made it to one Greensboro at Rome, GA game each of the last two years and hope to get to an Indianapolis at Gwinnett, GA in a couple weeks so I am actually hoping for NO more promotions to the majors until then. My daughter and I also hope to be at the Pirates – Braves game this Friday. For her the Ronald/Ozzie show, for me the Roansy show if the rotation holds as it is!

Here’s to hoping you get your Ro day

Perhaps a daily update on injured players throughout the system could be provided. Maybe just a listing of injured players with one or two sentences. Even, ‘no update’ or something similar is information for eager Pirate fans.

I think, it may have changed, the Pirates give one scheduled update weekly to the media on all injuries…🤔

I agree on this and it wouldn’t even necessarily have to be daily. Richie seemed to disappear and was even sure he was alive after a while lol.

In the last few days I saw an article that proposed the Yankees trade for Bryan Reynolds to solve their centerfield problem. This is nothing new for NYer’s, fans or media. I suppose they intend to send a few low-level prospects or perhaps a couple dozen bats and balls so they can augment their ‘all-star’ team. Laughable though this suggestion is, past Pirate regimes, might bite on this ridiculous scheme. As example, the Gerrit Cole to Houston trade comes to mind.   I mention this only to highlight an impending Pirate dilemma, not to endorse a Reynolds trade. The Pirates seem to have developed (?) a plethora of near major-league ready middle infielders and outfielders, more than they can place on the 40-man roster. Ultimately, the numbers will force some to be released, like Cole Tucker. Or, some could be traded for equally, though more risky, lower-level prospects that would keep the ‘assembly-line’ rolling. It seems to me that’s what Cherington may be attempting. In any case, the Pirates may be approaching an ‘embarrassment of riches’ regarding young major-league ready prospects. Aside: It’s a pleasure to watch these youngsters come of major-league age.   Another possibility is position switches. The Pirates have a major league problem at first base. Once, I suggested in this forum, that Oneil Cruz be moved to first. His 6-foot 7-inch frame would indicate he will ultimately be forced off shortstop and possibly make outfield play difficult in the long term. Another commenter replied regarding Cruz’s strong arm. Certainly, that’s a consideration but keeping Cruz healthy and filling all position needs seems more important. At minimum, he should be made familiar with first base.   Oh, I almost forgot. I’d like to see more content on this site regarding all these issues. Thanks for all you do. You make one long-time Pirate fan very happy, very often.

Tim, I always enjoy the ‘what has changed’ articles, explaining the reasons for the improvement or lack of improvement in a players numerical performance(just a hot or cold streak or something changed), and the insight from the players themselves. The highest profile players – Henry Davis for example – likely interest me less because they get coverage in a lot of places. The nuggets to me are the lower level players maturing and real adjustments made by others.

Some players that have me asking questions right now are:

MacGregor – he is on a hot streak – is this just the final steps of TJ recovery and is there legitimate reason for hope (and possibly even a return to starting)? Pre TJ he seemed to be on a very good path.

Macias – he seemed to more than hold his own at higher levels last year but is now back in High A. Is this just for playing time or did I think he was more than he really may be?

Florencio – was his success last year from being too good a pitcher for Low A without the stuff for higher levels or has he regressed in some way this year?

I also have a pure site admin question. I have sent several inquires to pbn@pittsburghbaseballcom without response. No need for details here, I just want to make sure that is the correct place to send my questions.

Send it to tim@piratesprospects.com.

We’ve got one of your guys in tomorrow’s article drop.

Absolutely love this site and enjoy reading all the comments from folks on here. Very intelligent minds here and appreciate the daily grind all you readers and writers put into this site

I think a pre-game article highlighting some players on both teams we should keep an eye on would be nice. I purchased the MiLB package and watch a lot of minor league hames

I’ve got an idea similar to that.

Thanks! That would be awesome!!!

wow, I had no idea that so few subscribers comment. I don’t comment a lot, usually a stupid sarcastic comment here and there just for giggles. The regulars here are simply amazing, I just love reading the comments as much as the articles as there are some very bright folks on board. I don’t have much else to add, just appreciative of everyone’s contributions.

Imo, it’s one of those areas when the Pirates are in No Man’s Land (and in this case I mean that as they’re not competing for division, nor the cellar at the moment). I think you’ll see more if they’re actually still in WC contention later in season, or if they start bottoming out.

But, we do have the rebuild hitting the Major League roster with prospects moving on up. What is so cool about this season to me is different prospect wise. We have seen 8 rookies play (or about to play) significant roles now. The great thing is, there are a lot of quality prospects still on the farm. I can’t remember when the last time there was this much movement to the Show and still had a lot of talent remaining. Usually the cupboard would filled with dust if this many kids were moved up and half would have had no business being in the show. The game has gotten fun for me again.

Definitely. I’ve started watching parts of games again lol Altoona and Indy rosters have started to thin out a bit, but they’re all still worthwhile to watch.

This site is incredible, thank you so much for everything! I love the idea of leaving some threads open for general discussion as occasionally I will have a question to pose but no good place to leave it.

Also, I love all of the different articles that yinz produce out here but the roundtables have to be my favorite 🙂

This will be a good week for Roundtable discussions.

I love the comment section, because of the quality of the content. I’m not into the metrics like some folks, so I appreciate the in depth perspective that many provide.

You guys have developed me to the point I’m no longer so focused on performance, but rather on tools 1st, and their individual development. I wish to continue this journey, the one that has me going – ah ha! Rather than – where’d that come from? When a prospect figures it out in the high Minors.

That’s really cool to hear, and thank you Rob for being a long time reader!

The recent Po-Yu Chen article on his tools and development this season is at the core of what I want from Williams & Co. The deep dives are Awesome!

That was a fun article to put together. We’re going to have a lot more deep dives.

“Sometimes those discussions take the articles above them to a deeper level of analysis.” This is another aspect of PP I appreciate, my life currently is too full for full-on Pirates nerd-dom, but these discussions feel like I’m sitting with all y’all around a neighborhood bar shooting the breeze. In other words, Cheers, Norm, Sam, Cliff… ———– How is the demographic mix, I know we have our share of older subscribers, but is there a mix of 20-30 somethings? Is there some way this group could be targeted effectively? I failed to pass my love of baseball to my sons, they were soccer jocks, and still think baseball is boring 😩

Yep, I think that this pretty much would be us…..

My plan is to start a TikTok channel at some point this year.

hah – I barely have heard of that (true story!)

Checking in for the younger crowd and unfortunately, pretty much all of my peers find baseball to be boring and do not follow closely. I am not sure how to change that for this site, but that is where I find so much enjoyment here is having more people to converse and interact with about our Buccos!

My kids are all busy with craploads more things in their lives to be heavy into fandom. When I was their ages, we did not near the amount of other things to occupy our times besides work. Fantasy leagues seem to be more popular than actual fandom of individual teams. Till makes the sport go but not as many fans that root for teams as opposed as individual players.

That’s an excellent point. Similar to the different perspective in music. They younger people that I know listen to songs, not groups or albums. When I hear a song I like I look up the group and I may buy an album. They do not – they listen to the one song. Someone has enough good songs and they may look up more of the songs. Maybe if we have enough good players on our team they will become interested in the team. If we gain a reputation of being one of the best teams, maybe then they’ll begin to take an interest in the team. My daughter had the same perspective. She liked McCutchen, and had no interest in the rest of the team.

I might borrow this line of thought for a column idea I had while reading it.

Bob, you haven’t been as active lately, we need you buddy, not just the crow GIF!!

Have been helping my youngest move the last few weeks. Getting back to normal these days 🙂

I turned a baseball hating roommate when I was in the USMC into a fan, he once asked me how do I watch that boring game, I told him about the battle between the pitcher and batter, the pitcher strengths and weakness v batters. Bonilla was at the plate batting right handed, I told him, that the pitcher was about to make a mistake and come in with a low fastball and is gonna be a home run, it was and he hit it out….he was blown away that I was able to guess ( it was a total guess!). Anyway, he began to watch, then became this hardcore card collector. Lost touch, but I like to think he is still a fan.

Spot on, a room like this allows us to talk, respectfully, on our favorite team without getting a DUI after the game is over🤣… I do like the new generational stat thinkers on here making me widen my ‘eye test’ vision, im an old timer and I guess also a nerd, on baseball, im the Dos Equis beer guy on everything else, actually not so much 🤣🤣🤣

I really enjoy the articles that combine analysis with videos. The one about Jimenez was great. I am not sure they would work as well for hitters, but videos about defensive skills might.

It’s typically easier to break down pitchers early. Hitters take more time. I do have a hitter breakdown I’m working on this week.

IMHO this is an excellent idea Roberto👏👏, im always curious about how prospects are doing defensively, especially with positional changes/flexibility. Poor Anthony is probably rolling his eyes thinking, “great, i have to write and dig up harder to find videos on yet another article”🤣🤣🤣….no rest for the weary🤣🤣🤣

So much for those four hours of sleep I was looking to get 😂

Hi Tim, i like that, if I’m understanding correctly, there will be a clear MLB Pirate daily thread early morning, which I support even though i dont participate much there. I commented ystd on P2Daily article that those prospect updates sometimes get hijacked with the usual mlb pirate comments. So a clear place for those comments to take place while allowing focussed Prospect thread discussions is AWESOME, imho. THX👍👍

I don’t think we will ever prevent crosstalk, but I do want to provide designated spaces.

We don’t really cover the MLB team, so giving you guys an all-day spot to discuss the team seems like a good alternative. That discussion will be better than anything any of us can do individually, on top of everything else.

I don’t know what time it is on your side of the world, but 3200 words are going up in about 7 hours.

Cool, I’m 12 hrs ahead of you guys on EST, will be reading shortly. Thanks again👏👏

Wait. if you’re 12 hours ahead, does that mean you know the game result before we do? 🤔

Yuppers mate, and i read the daily P2 articles before Tim and Anthony posted them🤣🤣

You mind posting the article drop tonight when you’re done reading? 🤣

I can access/read what you guys drop in the future, I dont have the ability to actually do anything worthwhile as you suggest🤣🤣

Sooooo That means you are kinda like Biff Tannen and are becoming filthy rich betting on games that you know the results of 12 hours early!!! Sweet!!

Love the roundtables and the Solometo feature where ever writer gave their opinion about his start. But to be truthful I read and enjoy every article every day.

We’ve got a new feature this week that follows the Roundtable format.
