Finnish plastic compounds manufacturer Premix Group is preparing to open its first manufacturing site in the United States. The company revealed plans this month to invest $47 million in a production plant in South Carolina that will supply goods to American customers.

“The new capacity will improve Premix’s global supply capacity and mitigate risks in global supply chains,” Jari-Matti Mehto, president and chief executive officer of Premix Inc., said in a Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC) release. “With the new US plant, we will improve our ability to serve our customers in the important US market.”

Located in Gaston County’s Apple Creek Corporate Center, the location will include manufacturing, warehouse, office, and lab space for diagnostic testing. The firm’s electrically conductive plastics are used in automotive, diagnostics, electronics, industrial, and life sciences applications.

The US Department of Defense (DOD) recently awarded a $79.9 million contract to Premix Inc. to develop the plastic compound plant in North Carolina. Slated to become operational in 2025, the site will focus on plastic materials for diagnostic testing, including compounds that are suitable for pipette tips.

Over 30 new jobs will be created through the project with an average annual salary of $54,063. A performance-based grant of $75,000 was approved by One North Carolina Fund to support the development.
